Week 2-1 Cultures that use sand to tell stories

This week, we explored sand as a medium for decoration and telling stories.  First the children played in the sandbox, and together they created a two distinct communities.  One group worked together to create baked goods - apple pie, 7 muffins, 4 cupcakes and a lot of cookies. The other group worked together to dig holes for houses, build houses, and find buried treasure.

Children quite naturally infuse stories and imagination in their play.  In this particular case, all they needed was the sand table, sand tools and toys and each other.

For the last part of group, I showed the children part of a video on the Vanuatu Sand Drawings.  I then told the children a story- using sand.  Each child gave me a handful of sand for the story- this is special sand, because it's from all of us.  And so this is our story that we can retell all week long

One sunny and warm day, a little girl named Soleil, went for a walk- she set out on a very special journey.  Her baby brother Pebble was very sick and this made her very sad.

Soleil began to cry and all of a sudden it started to rain.

The Great Sky Cloud saw the little said girl and asked her what was wrong.  She told him that she needed to find a special flower to make medicine for her sick brother.

The Great Sky Cloud told her to take the trail up the mountain and she will find what she seeks in between the peaks.  Soliel was still very sad because she did not know which mountain she should take.

The Great Sky Cloud told her to look for the mountain that looks like a bear.  Soleil found the mountain!

Then Soliel found the special flower!
This made Soleil very happy.  Her brother got his medicine and they both lived happily ever after.
