Week 1-1: What is Decoration?

After the Halloween stroll in the neighbourhood, I wondered if the children could see any decorations inside our school.  They discovered artwork on the wall.  In the picture below Mathew questioned whether or not the painting was decoration "But who painted that, and who put it there?"  I asked him why that mattered and he said that "it just did."

Cameron pointed out the painting as a decoration
Then the children noticed the border around the window.

Now that we have established that on occasions like Halloween, people like to decorate the outside of their houses, with things like pumpkins, spiderwebs, and ghosts, I asked the children about what kind of decorations they have inside their homes.   Do they have any decorations in their kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, play rooms?   Here are some of their thoughts:

Damon:  I want batman on my curtains inside and outside, nice and big so I can see it
Matthew:  I have a blanket on my bed but its not decoration, it covers me
Cameron:  There are pictures on the walls and the walls also have paint and that's decoration .

Then we decided that we could use our imagination and create the house of our dreams with the play house!

The first step is to label the rooms and then decide where the furniture belongs.
