Water Conservation: part 1

At Creative Minds, we are an environmentally conscious community: we compost food scraps and recycle plastics.  This lead me to ask the children why we do these things?  And here were their thoughts:
Pauline - So that the garbage doesn't get too full and heavy
Lysander - People make things that we can use from the plastic
Pippa - Because it is not garbage
Jeffery - Everybody recycles, that's why !

With that we explored the world's largest garbage dump - The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.  This is an island made out of garbage and plastics.  It takes 700 years for plastic to break down so it's important that we do not put plastic in the garbage otherwise it will end up in the ocean for a very very long time.

Part 1: paper mache & tape plastic containers that children recycled

Part 2: painting the garbage island in the sunshine

I had the privilege to watch the children flow while completing this group project.  They had to pass each other the paint cups, and make room for one another in front of their canvas with limited space.  No one child could paint without coordinating his/her body movement with the other.  Paint cups were effortlessly passed over each other's heads, out of necessity.  There was no right or wrong way to paint- some children poured the paint onto the canvas and then used their brush to spread it around.  Creative potential that exists beyond fixed agendas or rules - we just have to let go to let it flow.
